Alaria is a member of family of brown seaweeds. Alaria is a prolific algae with ribbon like leaves that grows from 6' to 12' long. It is a traditional food along the coasts of the far north Atlantic Ocean. It is eaten both fresh or cooked in Greenland, Ireland and Scotland. Alaria's mild flavor profile makes it a compatible blend with many other foods. It is commonly blanched, marinated steamed for use with salads, blended with other vegetables, beans and soup. It is also fried or roasted for tasty chips.
Like all edible seaweeds, Alaria is a rich source of vitamins and minerals. It is a particularly great source of potassium, calcium, magnesium, dietary fiber, zinc, Vitamin A and B complex.
